Below we’ve got all you need to know about the West Columbia Riverwalk, Cayce Riverwalk, and the Saluda Riverwalk!

Quick Summary: Columbia Riverwalks

The Three Rivers Greenway Trail connects the West Columbia Riverwalk, Cayce Riverwalk, and Saluda Riverwalk — offering:

Riverwalk Columbia, SC: The Three Rivers Greenway Trail

There are 3 main “Riverwalks” in the Columbia area – West Columbia Riverwalk, Cayce Riverwalk, and Saluda Riverwalk. All three of these trails make up parts of the Three Rivers Greenway Trail. The Three Rivers Greenway Trail is not yet fully complete, but once it is, it will connect for more than 20 miles across the Midlands!

The Three Rivers Greenway Trail, including these 3 riverwalks, is all paved, wide, and perfect for all different types of activities and fitness levels – biking, walking, jogging, rollerblading, bird watching, backpacking, picnicking, and fishing just to name a few.

What’s even better is that the majority of the trail is shaded and runs along the different rivers providing great views, a bit of a breeze, and the ability to dip your toes in on a “famously hot” Columbia day. Dogs are welcome on all of these trails; however, they must remain on a leash, and please don’t forget to clean up after them!

While the Three River Greenway Trail is a popular hiking destination here in Columbia, there are several other enjoyable places to go hiking that we think you’d love!

Water access at West Columbia Riverwalk

West Columbia Riverwalk

The West Columbia Riverwalk runs along the banks of the Congaree River and offers so many fantastic amenities! This part of the Three Rivers Greenway Trail is relatively flat with only small hills and curves. The trail runs under two bridges, offers great shade, and is open from dawn to dusk each day.

We recently took my son here to get some practice on his balance bike, and it was the perfect place to do so! We also had our foldable wagon with us for my younger daughter, and although we did pass several other groups of people, there was plenty of room for everyone, and we never felt like we needed to leave the paved path to let others through.

Amphitheater at West Columbia Riverwalk

Amphitheater at West Columbia Riverwalk

The main attraction here, aside from the trail itself, is the large amphitheater which can be used for concerts, fundraisers, theater events, and more. This is also a great place to rest and enjoy the beautiful views, stretch, or even add in some extra cardio by using the amphitheater steps.

Tubing and Kayak Rentals

The tube, canoe, and kayak rentals are another great opportunity at the West Columbia Riverwalk. There are several different tubing options – double tube, superstar, deluxe, and standard as well as guided canoeing and kayaking tours. Children must be at least 10 years or older to accompany you for this fun outing.

You will park and check in at the parking lot for the riverwalk and then be shuttled up to the Saluda River to begin your adventure. The whole trip will take about three hours. Coolers are permitted; however, they do not allow any Styrofoam or glass bottles. You can make reservations online with Palmetto Outdoor or even walk up to rent your equipment. If you decide to walk up, please be mindful that they accept cash only.

Other Fantastic Amenities at the West Columbia Riverwalk

A new amenity at the West Columbia Riverwalk is permanent workout equipment all along the trail. This workout equipment is easy to spot and provides movements such as dips, arm presses, elliptical-style workouts, and more! I love this feature as it mixes two great things – outdoors and fitness, a perfect combination!

There is also a large restroom facility, plus benches and picnic tables along the trail, a paved parking lot, and water stations for both people and their furry, 4-legged friends! While here, don’t forget about Carraway Park right across the street from the main riverwalk parking area!

Cayce Riverwalk

Like the West Columbia Riverwalk, the Cayce Riverwalk can also be found along the Congaree River. Throughout this section of the riverwalk, you will find several historical markers that provide information about this area of town, once known as the Colonial Village of Granby. There are also restrooms here, free parking, and emergency call boxes throughout the pathways.

Cayce Riverwalk

You Can See Beautiful Art Along the Cayce Riverwalk

Several local artists have pieces on display along the Cayce Riverwalk. You can search for animal sculptures carved into the wood of fallen trees, an iron bench shaped like the face of a lion, and a beautiful mural under the Blossom Street bridge.

Free Shelters for Rent

There are two covered shelters that can be reserved FREE of charge at the Cayce Riverwalk:

  • The Riverwalk Pavilion
    • Located in the main parking area of the Cayce Riverwalk
    • Includes 6 picnic tables
    • Holds up to 50 people
  • The Congaree Shelter
    • Located at the intersection from Main Entrance
    • Provides a fantastic view of the river
    • Includes 2 picnic tables
    • Holds up to 16 people

Address: Main Entrance – 201 Naples Avenue, Cayce, SC 29033

Saluda Riverwalk

The Saluda Riverwalk is one of the newest expansions of the Three Rivers Greenway Trail. This pathway runs for 7.3 miles and is located near the Riverbanks Zoo. In the future, there are plans to connect the Saluda Riverwalk to the rest of the Three Rivers Greenway Trail and downtown Columbia.

How do you get to Boyd Island in Columbia, SC?

One super cool thing about the Saluda Riverwalk is that it leads to Boyd Island! To get here, go left once you park and enter the gate. It can be a bit confusing because the paved trail ends, making it seem like you’ve reached the end of the path but keep going!

You will come to a bridge that will then lead you onto the island where you can continue your adventure and day of sightseeing.

Address: 650 Candi Lane, Columbia, SC 29210

Scenes from the South Carolina State Fair

The Fair is Coming to Cola Town!

The countdown is on and the fair is just around the corner! For some of us, it means that fall and cooler weather are finally here and for others, it is a time for family reunions, fantastic day trips, unmatched entertainment, and great memories!

No matter what your reasoning for attending, I think we can all agree the delicious, over-indulging on sweet treats matched with twist-twirly rides is what we’re all most ecstatic about!

When You Can Enjoy the State Fair in Columbia, SC

As we mentioned before, the state fair will be in Columbia, SC, from October 8 – October 19, 2025. The fair has different hours depending on the day of the week. Admission into the fair will end TWO HOURS before the fair closes, and in general, the rides begin about ONE HOUR after the gates open each day.

On opening day, October 8, admission into the fair will be from noon until 9 pm, while rides will be operating from 1 pm through 11 pm. Be sure to check the fair website for a detailed list of admission, rides, and building dates and times.

Less Crowded Times to Visit the Fair

Any day or time at the fair is sure to be a treat! However, if you’re looking to beat the crowds and you have some flexibility in your schedule, we suggest going during the weekdays, Monday through Thursday. In general, the morning and early afternoon hours are much less crowded.

If you’re limited to only the weekends, try to get in and out by about 4 or 5 pm, as any time after this is exceptionally busy!

South Carolina State Fair Tickets

How to Save Money on Your SC State Fair Tickets

Beginning September 9th, 2025 you can save up to 50% on admission and ride tickets by purchasing online or at participating Circle K locations. All tickets purchased in advance can be used ANY day of the fair. Ticket prices for general admission are as follows:

  • 0-5 years old – free
  • 6-54 years old – $10 when purchased in advance, $20 at the gate
  • Senior citizens – $10 when purchased in advance, $15 at the gate

There’s also a FLASH SALE for tickets on August 25th where for a very short time you can get 5 tickets for just $45 from 10 am – 3:00 pm. Be sure to check it out!

SC State Fair Lunch Bunch Deal

Another cost-conscious way to enjoy the fair this year is their “lunch bunch” deal. To take advantage of this deal, you must go to the fair on a weekday, Monday through Friday, excluding opening day, October 8th.

Admission tickets will cost $20 when you mention this deal; however, if you leave by 2 pm, you will get your $20 back! So, if you’re just looking for a quick adventure or even just to go grab a bite to eat, this is the deal for you!

Purchasing Ride Tickets

Fair rides, for some of us, are the best part of going to the fair! There are two options for purchasing ride tickets. You can get an all-day wristband that will allow you to ride as many thrillers as you want to, or you can purchase individual tickets.

When purchasing the all-day pass in advance, you will receive a voucher to take with you and exchange for your wristband or 90 ride tickets. Please be aware that ALL riders must be present to exchange their vouchers! Tickets for rides are:

  • Vouchers/Wristbands are $32 in advance, $40 at the fair Monday to Thursday, and $42 Friday to Sunday
  • Individual tickets are $10 for 20 tickets, $30 for 65 tickets, $60 for 140 tickets

It is important to know that kiddie rides usually cost 9 tickets per ride, while larger rides will require between 12 and 18 tickets per ride.

All You Need to Know for Parking at the Fair

To park at the fair, you will need to enter through Gate 6, Gate 7, or Gate 10. Parking will be $10/vehicle EXCEPT on October 18, when parking will cost $20/vehicle due to the UofSC home football game.

If you are in need of handicap parking, enter through Gate 6, Gate 7, or Gate 10, and be sure to have your official handicap license or placard with you.

Making Your Way Around the Fairgrounds

It is best to think of the fairgrounds as a big rectangle. There are two entrances into the fair: the South Gate off of George Rogers Boulevard and the North Gate off of Rosewood Drive. Both entrances will bring you into the middle, where you will also find the majority of the kiddie rides.

If you make your way towards Bluff Road, you will find the games, rides, Circus tent, and food zones. On the other end of the fair, towards Assembly Street, you will find all things agriculture, animals, the main arena, and arts and crafts buildings.

One important thing to note: the First Aid Station is located near the North Gate next to the rocket ship sculpture.

South Carolina State Fair Rides

You Can Rent Strollers and More

Strollers, wheelchairs, and scooters can be rented from the South Gate. In order to rent these items, you must show your valid ID and make a refundable deposit. Pricing is as follows:

  • $15 strollers
  • $20 wheelchairs
  • $60 electric scooters

SC State Fair Packing Guide: What to Bring and Not Bring

Please be aware that the State Fair does have a clear bag policy in place that resembles that of Williams-Brice Stadium. Each person is allowed to have one clear bag. For fair-goers who have MEDICAL needs that require additional bags, after further inspection of your belongings, exceptions are typically allowed.

Some great things to bring along with you for your day of fair fun are:

  • Tennis shoes
  • Light jacket if going at night
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen if going during the day
  • Small, personal fan
  • Small cash and change if you plan to play games
  • For families who have younger children, we highly suggest bringing your own stroller, foldable wagon, or carrier

These things might be tempting to bring, but are not permitted at the fairgrounds:

  • Outside food and drinks
  • Selfie sticks
  • Fanny packs that aren’t clear

Sensory Friendly Morning at the SC State Fair

On Thursday, October 16, 2025 from 10 am until noon, the fair will be hosting a Sensory-Friendly morning.

It’s no secret that the fair can oftentimes feel crowded and overstimulating, so during this time, select rides will be operating with no music or lights, barns will be open in order to enjoy the animals, and art buildings will also be open with a much more relaxing atmosphere in mind.

Food vendors will begin their sales at 11 am.

Columbia State Fair Favorites

Rides

This year, the fair will offer more than 60 exhilarating rides with a little bit of something for everyone! From small kiddie rides that are perfectly sized for our tots, to those that twist and flip way up in the air, no matter what your age (or tolerance of twirling), there’s fun to be had!

Last year my toddler had a blast on the two-story carousel as well as a ride on the awesome and enclosed, air-conditioned Ferris Wheel . . . 10/10 recommend! They even allowed us to take our newborn in the Ferris Wheel “pod” with us. Another great “ride” to utilize is the Skyglider which takes you back and forth from the middle of the fair to the end of it where you will find a majority of the rides.

Concerts & Entertainment

With several stages all throughout the fairgrounds, there are so many wonderful shows and talents to enjoy! Here are just SOME of the most popular acts and stages that we want to be sure you’re aware of:

  • Pepsi Place Stage
    • Good Vibrations – Celebrating the Music of the Beach Boys on October 9, 2025, 7 pm
    • Coffey Anderson on October 10, 2025, 7 pm
  • Academic Avenue Stage
    • Boiled Peanut Eating Contest on October 8, 2025 at 5:30 pm
    • The Dennis Lee Band – October 8th – 12th
  • Roving Entertainment
    • The Illuminator
    • Washboard Willy – October 8th – 13th
    • Mariachi Divas – October 8th – 16th

Be sure to check the SC State Fair Entertainment Schedule for a full list of concerts and shows!

Circus

Yay, the Circus is back at the State Fair in 2025! For the sixth consecutive year, you can enjoy a FREE Circus at the State Fair! During this 40-minute show, you will get to enjoy trampoline acrobats, motorcycle and trapeze athletes, animals, and more! The Circus begins each day at 2 pm, 4:30 pm, and 7:30 pm.

The Circus can be found near the South Gate Entrance – just look for the jumbo red and white circus tent. You can’t miss it! All seating is first come, first serve, so if you want a good seat we suggest getting there early, especially if you’re planning on attending either of the two later performances.

SC State Fair Food

Where are all the fair food lovers at?! At the 2025 SC State Fair, you will find over 90 food vendors selling all the good stuff – elephant ears, corn dogs, deep-fried everything, candied apples, lemonade, funnel cakes, salads, turkey legs and so much more! Is your mouth watering yet?

Where to Find the Food

Two of the main food zones can be found next to the kiddie areas and the third is near the Circus tent! There are always tons of picnic tables and covered seating options available to sit down and enjoy your tasty treats! Don’t forget about the “lunch bunch” ticketing deal discussed above!

What to Eat at the South Carolina State Fair

The food line-up is awesome so come hungry! Here are some of the things we had the opportunity to try in years past!

🍩🍔 Donut Burger at DeAnna’s Diner – This was surprisingly delicious! The Donut was light and airy and not overly sweet! The donut bun didn’t take away from the burger flavor at all, which by the way was cooked to perfection! The burger was topped with bacon which gave a nice balance of salt to compliment the donut and icing drizzle!

Donut burger

🥩 – Garlic Marinated Steak on a Stick also at DeAnna’s Diner was delicious! It was well seasoned and tender, but be sure to order more than one because trying to share this caused our family to feud! It was sooooo good! 🤤

🥒🍕 – Okay so this one has raised some chatter across social media, and it is time to weigh in! I personally LOVE pickles, but my husband does not . . . we both LOVED this pizza! The Pickle flavor wasn’t overpowering; think of it as Dill pizza instead of Pickle pizza. This will be a newly requested topping on our family pizza nights. We believe there are 2 stands offering this delicacy: Spaghetti Eddie’s (Near Cantey Building) and A&W Concessions (located on the Circus side of the Fair near Skyglider). The one pictured here was from A&W, but try them both and tell us which you like best!

Dill pickle pizza, food at the SC State Fair

🎃 Pumpkin Funnel Cake – with Cinnamon Cream Cheese Icing was absolutely delicious. Lightly pumpkin flavored, just the right crunch and level of sweetness. This is an absolute must try! Prowant Specialty Company

Fried dough at the state fair

🥩🍨DeAnna’s Steak Sundaes were also yummy, and though we didn’t get to try all the Sundaes, I would bet everything at the stand including Pulled Pork, Cajun Shrimp, and Mexican Street Corn Sundae are bursting with flavor! Both the Mighty Mango Tea and Watermelon Arnold Palmer were light and refreshing, and they had a deal for refills which is nice when you’re there all day and night!

Steak Sundae

🌽 Mexican Street Corn Cup and Specialty Cup of Corn from The Meatball Factory were amazing! The Specialty Cup comes with hot and regular Cheeto, Parmesean cheese, and mayo – both full of flavor and tender corn. Be sure to top with a squeeze or two of lime and a dash of heat! Everything you need to make it your own is available at the stand.

More Things To Love at the State Fair

Can you believe that there are even more great things to discover at the SC State Fair?! The animals are another popular fair attraction! There is an excellent petting zoo, entertaining pig races and swimming, animal shows, and more.

You can also enjoy fair games and prizes, arts and crafts exhibits such as sculptures, paintings, photography, sandscapes, and student art.

Quick Tips for Your State Fair Visit

🎡 There is a clear bag policy, so check out their site for details to save yourself time at the gate.

🎡 Plan food stops ahead of time! There are food maps available online, and we highly recommend printing one out ahead of time and planning your food stops.

🎡 Go early and plan to stay late! There is so much fun to be had; it’s hard to squeeze everything into one day, so chances are you’ll stay longer than you thought you would! Bring a hoodie along for yourself and kids in case it gets chilly at night.

🎡 Pre-plan and prioritize activities – in addition to food and rides there is a sand sculpture exhibit, petting zoo, Circus, livestock competitions, and more! With so many things to do and see, be sure to experience the ones most interesting to you first or plan to visit multiple times!

Feed and Pet Goats, Pigs & More: Goat Daddy’s Farm, Elgin, SC

Posted on |

Inside: Meet various animals and purchase locally made products at Goat Daddy’s Farm in Elgin, SC.

Have you been thinking about a trip to Goat Daddy’s Farm?
Want to have a family day trip out to the country where you can hand-feed and pet a variety of animals?

At Goat Daddy’s Farm, not only will your family have the opportunity to do just that, but you will also gain great knowledge about animal care.

You’ll be able to discuss any questions you have with friendly and knowledgeable staff and have the opportunity to purchase your own goat milk products made from the goats right at the farm. So, what are you waiting for?

Feeding animals at Goat Daddy's Farm

Reasons to Love Goat Daddy’s Farm

Goat Daddy’s Farm was founded in 2014 with a vision to provide humanely-raised dairy products to South Carolina residents. Since then, they have grown rapidly and in 2021 officially became recognized as an animal sanctuary. They have been a part of rescuing several animals, nurturing them back to health, and providing them with a safe environment. They work closely with veterinarians, DNR, and DHEC to ensure that not only are their animals healthy, but that their products are safe for consumption as well.

This farm has done a fantastic job at making the most out of the space they have. There is so much to see and learn, and even some opportunities for hands-on experiences! Goat Daddy’s is open for private tours and events any day of the week. In the future, they may again offer public hours without reservations, but currently, you must sign up for a tour in advance.

Arriving at Goat Daddy’s

The road leading into Goat Daddy’s Farm is a long, narrow dirt road, but don’t let that deter you from the fun! You will go a little over ½ a mile down the road and arrive straight into the farm’s parking area. Please be cautious of speed bumps along the way. Because it is a dirt road, speed bumps are a bit hard to see but very much there!

Planning for Your Great Day

To best plan for your trip to Goat Daddy’s, it is important to note that the majority of the pathways here are dirt and gravel. That being said, we strongly recommend wearing tennis shoes or even boots!

The farm flows really nicely, making the need for a stroller or wagon relatively low. But, if you do think you’ll need one, a foldable wagon or a stroller that pushes really well and has bigger wheels is your best option.

My 3-year-old didn’t ask to get in our wagon once; however, we did have it with us for our 1-year-old. If you’ve got a younger kiddo, and the weather is nice, it would even be a good idea to wear them in a carrier in order to be hands-free!

Tickets for the Farm

Purchase your tour in advance.

At the time of our review, public hours were available, and food for the animals was sold. Each bowl-full of animal feed cost $5 and comes with both carrots and grain for the animals. Some animals are a bit particular in what they like, but you’ll learn quickly what they’re after – except the goats, they’ll eat it all and maybe even give a friendly nibble to your shirt while they’re at it (haha).

Animals You’ll Meet at Goat Daddy’s

Here are a few of my family’s favorite animals on the farm:

Goats

Not only are you able to feed the goats at the fence, but you can also go inside their pasture and hang-out with them! They were all so curious and loved the attention of everyone coming inside.

Also, at 10 am, on the first Saturday of every month, you can be involved in a goat milking demonstration. Staff members will tell you a little bit about goat life, the milking process, demonstrate how to milk a goat, and then anyone who is interested will be able to assist in goat milking!

All the kids loved this little event!

Camel – “Abu”

It’s not every day that you get to see a camel, much less FEED one. Abu made his way to Goat Daddy’s after a traumatic birth where he was left with a broken front left leg. Now, all healed up, Abu is friendly, enjoys all the carrots you’re willing to give him, and will allow you to gently pet him.

Camel at Goat Daddy's Farm

Horse – “Smokey”

Smokey is over 30 years old, but you’d never guess it by looking at him! He loves both grain and carrots. Be sure to hold your hand flat when feeding him!

Horses at Goat Daddy's Farm

Pot Belly Pigs

My son loved throwing carrots over to these big guys (and gals)! I don’t know much about pigs, but I don’t think they have the best eyesight. We had fun throwing in the snacks and watching which piggy would sniff their way to it first. They don’t move very fast, but they’re fun to watch nonetheless!

Pigs at Goat Daddy's Farm

Along with these animals you will also see a cow, chickens, a llama, tortoises, prairie dogs (inside the store), alpacas, donkeys, and more! If you have any questions about the animals on the farm, any of the staff members would be more than happy to answer them for you.

They are all very friendly and knowledgeable, and you can tell they truly love not only their jobs, but also the animals they care for! It was so refreshing to see!

Don’t Miss the Farm Store

Before completing your visit don’t forget to make a stop in the farm store! Here, you will find a variety of goat cheeses, goat milk, fresh eggs, goat soap, and more, straight from the animals at the farm. The goat soap smells amazing, and we couldn’t help but leave with a few bars of our own.

The farm store is also open throughout the week, Monday to Friday, from 10 am to 6 pm. You can order their products online, and they will have it ready for you with your name on it when you arrive.

Other Great Events at Goat Daddy’s Farm

Calling all yoga enthusiasts! You’ve got to give goat yoga at this farm a try! This is an hour-long class where you will get to interact with baby goats, exercise, enjoy a mimosa after class, and even get a tour of the farm – talk about a fun day!

Do be aware, however, that it is called GOAT YOGA for a reason, as in, baby goats WILL come up to you and demand your attention . . . and I’m not sure baby goats know many manners.

Another unique opportunity available at Goat Daddy’s is a soap-making class. Classes can be anywhere from 6 to 12 people and you will learn all the steps of making goat soap. At the end of the class each participant will be able to take home one bar of soap!

Additional events we encourage you to check out are their seasonal events, homeschool days, and homesteading and animal care classes. Goat Daddy’s is even available for birthday parties and weddings – how memorable!

You can also follow Goat Daddy’s Farm on Facebook to stay up-to-date with their events and announcements.

I loved the variety of dedicated jump spaces as it helped spread out the crowds and keep the kiddos engaged as they ran to and from different zones.

Ninja Course at Surge

Do You Have What it Takes? Ninja Course

Inspired by the popular TV series, “American Ninja Warrior,” the Ninja Course is sure to be a fun challenge! This is better suited for older children and adults. There are three different courses, each with four different (did I mention challenging?) obstacles.

These courses will test your balance, strength, and agility time and time again. Good luck!

Fly High at Surge Trampoline Park

Take a tall flight of stairs up to the high ropes course and large zipline. The zipline soars over a foam pit where you will let go and free fall at any point. At the high ropes course, you will be strapped into a harness and make your way across several balancing obstacles with dangling ropes to help guide you. Keep in mind, there are height requirements for both of these thrillers!

For the Tots: Surge Trampoline Park

At Surge Trampoline Park you will find TWO spaces dedicated to the tots! The trampoline area for toddlers was surprisingly very large and had its own small foam pit and a couple of small obstacles for climbing up on and jumping back down.

Parents and employees did a fantastic job at making sure this space stayed dedicated to just the littles.

Along with the toddler trampoline area, there is a second area completely detached from everything else. Here you can find a jungle-gym styled playscape with slides, low-hanging monkey bars, and plenty of climbing space.

There are also large, soft blocks and ramps that can be put together in different ways along the floor for added play and imagination.

Take a Leap into the Foam Pits

Throughout Surge Trampoline Park you will find several areas with foam pits. Two balance beams with jousting sticks can be found over one of these. This is always a popular game for the pre-teens! In addition to the balance beams, foam pits can be found underneath a high dive/diving board, trapeze bar, and slanted trampolines where you can attempt your best parkour tricks.

Test Your Luck at the Arcade

Have extra change lying around? Don’t forget to bring it along with you and save yourself from a tantrum or two. The arcade is set up in the middle of the play space and offers several popular arcade games. You can trade in any won tickets for small trinkets and goodies before you leave!

My Review of 16 Handles

My kids, mother-in-law, and I set out to try 16 Handles, and I have to admit, it is everything we dreamed of and more! Bright colors surround us and upbeat music fills the air, as we breeze into this modern ice cream dream. “Let the Good Times Swirl,” reads the bold pink and blue signage on the wall. Good times indeed.

We all grab our cups and head over to the self-serve stations. Each station is clearly labeled with a corresponding flavor. Most of us opted for vanilla, but one of my daughters insisted on birthday cake. Next up, the famous topping station! Another brightly colored sign adorns the wall in front of the toppings, “Choose Wisely Wildly.”

16 Handles Self-Serve station

There’s certainly a topping to accommodate the most and even least adventurous eater. My oldest daughter selects, rainbow sprinkles, Lucky Charm marshmallows, gummy bears, and marshmallows, while my youngest daughter and I (who are sharing a cup) opt for blueberries, rainbow sprinkles, and whipped cream. My mother-in-law decides on strawberries, boba pearl, and whipped cream.

After we all have selected all of our toppings, next everything is weighed and paid for. Ample seating makes it easy to navigate to a table through past the busy patrons.

The Verdict

Everyone in our party raves about how great everything is, and the girls muse over what toppings and ice cream flavors they want to try next time. There will definitely be a next time, and most certainly many more to follow.

Run, Don’t Walk

Hurry, go get it line, pick your flavor, top it off to your heart’s desire, rinse and repeat! Be sure to download the 16 Handles app for loyalty points, promo offers, and online ordering. Pickup and delivery is also available.

Baby and Toddler at EdVenture

I was very impressed by all of the thoughtful features throughout the museum for even the littlest of littles! For starters, the museum is well-planned out, making it easy to maneuver strollers to and from the exhibits. There is also an elevator located in the middle of the museum that is large enough for the whole family – strollers and all!

On the second floor, in “My Backyard” (the area for those under 3 years old), there is a cozy nursing room complete with a rocking chair, bookshelf, and dark, retractable curtains.

EdVenture Children’s Museum Exhibits

More than nine different areas with endless amounts of learning and exploration can be found at EdVenture. We will walk you through each level of the museum and let you know what to expect as you wander around with your kids!

On the main level of EdVenture you’ll find the majority of the museum’s exhibits.

World of Work

What do you want to be when you grow up? What about a firefighter? How about a farmer? Or maybe a chef or auto mechanic? You can try it all throughout this all-encompassing exhibit where kids can learn about different careers! “World of Work” takes up the majority of the main level of EdVenture!

Dalmatian Station

Dalmatian Station is located near the museum’s entrance, and it’s one of the first attractions families encounter upon arriving at EdVenture.

Dalmatian Station is an interactive fire safety exhibit. Here, children can learn about fire safety, create an escape plan, and even explore a real-life 24-foot fire truck with working lights. Dalmatian Station comes equipped with a fire truck, fire pole, water hoses, and even a crawl tunnel. And don’t forget to stop by the Fire Safety Theater, an immersive theater exhibit.

The theater features a video “Get out, Stay Out, Meet Up,” which teaches children important life-saving fire safety rules. A real, local firefighter is typically on stand-by in Fire Safety Theater to show the video and answer any questions afterward.

Busy Bee Farm

Across from Dalmatian Station, you will find a dairy and produce farm.

Here, your children can “milk” a cow, harvest vegetables, climb onto a tractor, and even collect fruits from the fruit trees to send to the grocery store.

Little Spot Diner

Be sure to also check out the Little Spot Diner and let your kids make you a delicious meal. From a pizza oven and stove, to plates and condiments, this diner is so lifelike, you can even eat your “food” directly at the counter!

Auto Works

Come explore the world of automobiles and transportation at Auto Works!

In this interactive exhibit, children can learn about automobile mechanics, operate vehicle controls, simulate car maintenance tasks, learn the technology behind vehicles, and even role-play!

Publix Market

The Publix Market is always a popular choice within the World of Work! With small, green Publix shopping carts, check-out lanes, and realistic foods and goods, your family is sure to have fun pretending to shop!

In early 2024, Publix Super Markets Charities introduced several new enhancements to the previous EdVenture grocery market, including new flooring, additional cash registers, new signage, and more!

Publix store at EdVenture

Richland Library

This exhibit offers a miniature version of a Richland County library branch, complete with children’s books, a puppet stage and theater, as well as fun and cozy reading nooks. For anyone seeking a calm environment within the museum, the library offers a quiet retreat!

EdVenture

Eddie!

You can’t miss him, he’s the world’s largest child measuring in at over 40 feet tall with a heart weighing over 500 pounds! Eddie is his name, and he will help teach your children all about body organs and their functions!

You can climb up a set of stairs that will take you into his stomach, intestines, heart, and brain. Eddie is the perfect combination of fun and education as his insides are set up like a jungle gym, but with realistic organs – You can hear his beating heart, the electricity inside of his brain as well as his stomach growling when you listen carefully.

As you make your way up, take a tunnel slide back down to his large shoes (which are each about the size of a car, might I add), and start your exploration again! I love that Eddie opens up a door for parents and caregivers to talk to and teach their children about the wonderful things our bodies can do at such an age-appropriate level.

In May 2023, EdVenture introduced a new companion for Eddie—a firefly! This new addition, replaced Eddie’s original companion, a dragonfly known as “Stink.” The new firefly, crafted by artist Meaghan Westfall, is named “J,” in honor of fallen Irmo Fire District firefighter James Muller.

MedVenture

MedVenture at EdVenture in Columbia, SC

At MedVenture, children can explore the world of medical professions through hands-on exhibits.

There’s a mini version of an ambulance to explore, a supersized surgical table like the board game “Operation,” as well as unlimited medical equipment and tools. Kids can even wear a hospital lab coat and stethoscope as they imagine they’re a doctor, surgeon, paramedic, x-ray technician, dentist, and physical therapist. And that’s just to name a few of the many different careers they can learn about here!

Wags & Whiskers

Get ready to put your children’s pet care abilities to the test! In this area, they will be able to care for a variety of different animals with x-rays, grooming and veterinary tools, and basic pet care needs. Wags & Whiskers teaches your child how to care for the health of their pets through interactive play.

Biolab at EdVenture

Let your child explore their inner scientist in the Biolab, designed to teach kids about biomedical science in a fun way! With teaching laboratories, this exhibit and programming is geared toward kids ages 5 – 14 to spark a lifelong interest in the biomedical field. *Be sure to check with the front desk upon arrival for lab times facilitated by a member of the Curiosity Crew.

Cooking Lab at EdVenture

Enjoy cooking and preparing real food in the Cooking Lab, all while learning about the body, how nutrition is important, and tie all the information together with what is taught in the Biolab.

The Great Outdoors

The outdoor area at EdVenture complements the indoor exhibits, offering both educational and fun activities through outdoor play. The Great Outdoors is made up of several areas: water play, gem mining, prop plane and a tricycle pathway. Be mindful, that your kids may get pretty wet in the water play area, so an extra shirt or full change of clothes isn’t a bad idea! Come play, cool off, climb, ride, mine or just come to learn!

Fly an Airplane on the Second Floor of EdVenture

The second level of the museum is home to all things science, engineering, and technology, but with a closed-off room dedicated to the tiniest explorers.

Flight at EdVenture

This part of the museum immerses children in the world of aviation and aerospace!

Proudly featuring a Boeing 757 cockpit, kids can actually sit in the pilot or co-pilot seat, explore the gears and gadgets, and even look out of the windshield at a view of the Congaree river! Additionally, you can experience the following:

  • Boeing 777 Flight Simulators
    • Three separate Boeing 777 flight simulators offer kids the opportunity to pilot a virtual flight
  • Boeing 747 Engine Cowling
    • A massive engine cowling serves as an entry point to the exhibit, providing a tactile experience of aircraft components.
  • Paper Airplane Station
    • Children can create, launch and test their own paper airplanes

  • KUKA Robot
    • Your child can use an aircraft robotic arm to help understand the properties of automation and engineering
  • Learning Theater
    • Come here to learn about the science behind flight with the use of real airplane fuselage sides and seats

Draw Alive

At this exhibit, children can help bring their drawings to life! First, your child will select a coloring sheet template (dinosaurs, planes, farm animals, etc). Next, they will color their sheet using markers provided. After the sheet has been colored, the drawing is placed under a scanner and within seconds, your child’s colored sheet will appear on the screen. Lastly, watch as your child’s animal or object come to life with animation and technology.

A-ha! Masterspace

In this area, your children will be able to create and build. In the “Open Make” center, there are several recycled materials where your kids can cut, glue, fold and color their own creations. There are also several different styles of blocks that can be found – magnetic, large Legos, KAPLA blocks, waffle blocks, etc. that will put your child’s problem-solving and engineering skills to the test!

This part of the museum is best suited for children 5-10 years old, however, with extra assistance, younger children might also be able to engage in some of the play (especially with the building blocks).

My Backyard exhibit at EdVenture

My Backyard

Strictly reserved for children 3 years old and younger, here you will find tons of toddler and baby-safe play! There is a treehouse-styled jungle gym, a boat where kiddos can dress up in rain boots and large yellow jackets, puzzles, soft play mats, a ball pit, and several ways to meet the sensory needs of your tots!

As mentioned before, there is also a nursing area and large, family-style restroom within.

Storytime, Crafts, Game Nights, & More for the Whole Family at Richland County Libraries

Posted on |

Have you been to your local Richland County Library recently?
Are you looking for events and learning opportunities that your whole family can enjoy? Of course, the libraries have books, but what a lot of people don’t know is that the Richland County Libraries host tons of family-friendly, wholesome events all throughout the week. There are groups for teenagers, crafting events for adults, storytimes for toddlers, learning workshops, and much, much more!

Richland County Libraries

Need more ideas on free things to do around Columbia? We’ve got you covered with more than 50 awesome free ideas!

About Richland Library

The Richland County Library system is made up of 13 libraries! With locations in downtown, West Columbia, Irmo, Hopkins, Eastover, and Blythewood there is sure to be a library near you.

The main library is located downtown off of Assembly Street and is massive, clean, and so well done! There are several different floors and the whole bottom floor is dedicated to kids and teens. On this level, you will find tables set up for coloring and simple artwork, scavenger hunts for preteens, a foosball table, puzzles, games, various styles of building blocks, and more. My son not only enjoys gathering up a few new books to take home but also wandering around and playing at all the neat stations.

Family Storytime at the Richland County Libraries

One library event that my kids and I LOVE is Family Storytime. This storytime is open to children from 0 to 12 years old. While the majority of attendees are babies and preschoolers, the library does a fantastic job at including children of all ages and tweaking things to meet the needs of the smallest babies up to the oldest kiddos in the group.

Why We Love Family Storytime

At Family Storytime you can expect to have several short stories read to your children with breaks in between books for fun, interactive songs, and movement. The end of storytime is left for open play and there are usually toys such as blocks, large stuffed animals, coloring, and puzzles available.

Not only is this a great opportunity for your littles to interact with their peers and learn through books and music, but it is also a fantastic time for caregivers to meet and chat with each other. I think we can all agree that even just a few minutes of adult interaction outside of your home can do WONDERS!

Children's Area in Richland County Libraries

Here’s Where You Can Enjoy Family Storytime

Family Storytime is held at several different library locations throughout the week. It is not uncommon for families to travel to one or two locations during the week to enjoy this family outing! Storytimes are usually around mid to late morning. However, storytimes change often, especially during the transition between summer and back to school, or can be canceled, so always be sure to double-check dates and times before heading out! Here are the branches that do storytime more regularly: Sandhills, Main, Ballentine, Northeast, Cooper, North Main, and Wheatley.

Richland County Libraries kids events

Richland Libraries – Preschool Crafts and Art Events

Another event my kiddos enjoy is the preschool crafts! The crafts are always very well-planned, organized, and unique! Sometimes a story will be read that goes along with the craft for that day; the craft is shown and explained; and then the kiddos are given their materials. The library has all you’ll need for each craft and even for clean-up!

Let’s Make Art!

I love the art events for several reasons, but the main reason is that it allows my kiddos to gain some independence and learn new skills that we wouldn’t usually do at home. Plus, I always think children learn best from their peers so having both younger and older kids all around gives them people to look up to as well as help out. It’s just an added bonus that not much planning or clean-up has to go on, on my end anyway – thank you, librarians!!

Art at Richland County Libraries

When and Where Your Kids Can Get Artsy

Some art events take place weekly; however, the majority of them are spread out throughout the month. As always, be sure to check the event location and time before going! Some craft events need to be registered for in advance as there may be a limited number of seats available.

Children's area at Richland County Libraries

Other Events to Enjoy at Richland Libraries

The events page of the Richland County Libraries is always packed full of great events for ALL age groups, skill levels, and interests. Take a look at a few more events we think would be great!

Pigskin Poets 2025

Each year, right before football season begins, the library hosts “Pigskin Poets.” At this event, the University of South Carolina football players, Cocky, and the librarians will read stories and poems, interact in games, and even sign autographs. This year, the event will be held on July 18, 2025, from 3 pm to 4:30 pm at The Drew Wellness Center. This is an event you won’t want to miss!

Teen Game Night

Does your teen love board games? How about video games? If so, you might want to send them to teen game night at the library! They will be able to partake in friendly competition and socially connect with peers who have similar interests. Heads up, registration is usually necessary for this event!

Sew Divine: A Gathering for Crafters

Sew Divine is held for adults and is a time to get together with people who share the same hobbies and interests as you!
