While Columbia doesn’t have many options for ice skating, there are a few ice skating rinks within a few hours of here. Only about 2 hours from Columbia, Charleston is a great option for a day trip! Head to the Carolina Ice Palace for some great family fun; then continue your adventure by strolling through downtown, sightseeing, or even planning a trip to the aquarium!

Live music, Santa, hot chocolate and sweets, and festive Christmas Caroling will be apart of this grand event. School choirs and bands will be there to help spread the Christmas cheer.
December 6, 2025, 6 pm to 9 pm Cayce Historical Museum
Take in the sights and sounds of Christmas at the Cayce Historical Museum’s “Christmas Olde and New”. Rooms of the museum will be decorated for Christmas along with live entertainment and refreshments. There will also be a holiday market!
Experience historic Christmas decor, with period decorations and demonstrations. There will be light refreshments that are historically accurate to the 19th century, such as hot cider and gingerbread. There will be blacksmithing on-site, cooking demonstrations, and more!
Head downtown for the 72nd annual Carolina Carillon Holiday Parade to enjoy the state-broadcasted parade! There will be marching bands, local churches, drill teams, and decorated floats before Santa Claus comes to town! The parade will start at the intersection of Sumter Street and Laurel Street and will head toward the USC Horseshoe and Senate Street.
The Town of Lexington and the Lexington Jaycees will host the annual Christmas Parade, featuring floats and more. The parade will begin promptly at 3 pm.
This wildly popular parade features ANYTHING, as long as it’s covered in lights! The parade starts at 5:30 sharp at the front of the Cayce Municipal Complex and will travel down 12th Street until ending at Highway 1 and 12th Street in West Columbia. Crowds are large, so arrive early and plan ahead!
The Christmas parade will begin at 4 pm with a tree lighting ceremony held at Town Hall to follow.

Visit one of our favorite coffee shops in Columbia for a cup of hot chocolate or maybe a peppermint mocha. Much cheaper than going out for a meal, but still loaded with all the holiday cheer.

For $7 per person ($2 for children 2 and under), you can explore the park on a 2-mile nighttime walk as it is decorated in festive light displays along the river. Pre-registration is required for this event and must be complete by 11/24/25. There will be bus transportation back to the parking lot available.
Totally Free Christmas Activities Worth the Drive
Day trips are sweeter when they are filled with free things to do. If the free Christmas events and things to do we already listed aren’t enough for you, try one of these awesome, and totally free, holiday events within just an hour or two of Columbia.
See Santa at Cabela’s or Bass Pro Shops. You’ll leave with a totally free 4×6 professional quality picture with Santa and some fun treats, plus enjoy some activities while you’re there! Head up to Greenville, SC for the nearest Cabela’s.
Greenville’s Festival of Trees is a not-to-miss Upstate event. Visit beautifully decorated trees throughout Downtown Greenville hotel lobbies, especially the Hyatt on Main Street. It’s totally free.
Watch Free Holiday Movies at NCG Cinemas. The nearest NCG Cinema is in Spartanburg, SC. So, if you’re heading up to the Upstate for one of the previously mentioned events, catch a movie while you’re there!

Festival of Trees in Greenville, SC (November 21st, 2025 through December 25th, 2025) See beautifully decorated trees lining the entranceways of two Downtown Greenville hotels, Courtyard Marriott Downtown and Hyatt Regency Greenville. This event is FREE and very popular among locals.

Speedway Christmas at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC
(Open nightly November 21st, 2025 through January 4th, 2026. 6 pm to 10 pm Friday)
More than 5,000,000 lights will be displayed on a four-mile course of Charlotte Speedway and synchronized to music (101.3 FM) and will be open rain or shine. Be sure to check out one of the drive-in movies being played on the giant Speedway TV while you are there (Thursday through Sunday only)!
There is also a tubing hill open Thursday through Sunday and tickets can be purchased for a discounted rate in combination with the Christmas program (Tubing tickets only available at booth beside tubing hill). Tickets are $46-63. 6 pm – 10 pm
(December 1, 2025 – December 26, 2025) This nearby town decks out completely for Christmas! As you travel through town you can expect to see Christmas trees floating on the lake, a large nativity scene, over 250 lit evergreen trees, and over 100 decorated homes. The display is from 5:30-10 pm nightly and it is recommended that you explore on foot to ensure you see all the decorated homes!
(November 28 – 30, December 5 – 7,12 – 14, 19 – 23, 26 – 30, 2025. Closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Eve.) Enjoy a magical mountain train ride through lights and a winter wonderland. Tickets are $65/adults, $45/ages 3-12, free/kids under 2. Santa will be there and guests can ride some of the attractions at the park.
Cashiers Christmas Parade The 51st Cashiers Christmas Peppermint Stick Parade will kick off at 3 pm on Saturday, December 6th, 2025 but plan to arrive early to park and find a viewing spot.
Santa on the Chimney in Chimney Rock, NC The 28th Annual Santa on the Chimney will take place on Saturday, December 6, 2025, from 11 AM to 2 PM. Watch Santa Claus climb Chimney Rock. Santa will also be available after each climb to greet guests and take photos. This event has placed as one of the top Santa sightings in the USA. There will also be animal encounters, an elf-guided hike, vintage typewriter-written letters to Santa, create a holiday ornament and complimentary holiday treats! If you plan on coming to town for one of these dates be sure to come early and have Breakfast with the Elves at the Old Rock Cafe, 8 am – 11am.

NORAD Tracks Santa
In 1955 a young man accidentally called the Continental Air Defense Command asking if they had seen Santa flying through the sky. While the child had meant to call a Santa Hotline, the person who answered the phone that Christmas Eve just happened to be the Commander in Chief, Colonel Harry Shoup. About: The Fireflies Holiday Lights is returning for the third year here in Columbia, SC, and is all the rave this year, boasting an even bigger and brighter experience than last year! The Segra Park baseball stadium, home of the Fireflies, is decked out in tons of twinkling lights and interactive displays, there are several “stations” for families to stop and enjoy seasonal treats and kid-friendly crafts, and much more! Santa will make his appearance each night from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm.

Check out beautiful displays throughout the Columbia and Midlands community! Remember that these are private homes and are the result of a lot of hard work and expense. Please don’t enter the property unless invited to walk through. Do not block roads.

Lisznyai House,725 Formby Drive, Columbia in the Spring Valley Subdivision. Synchronized display, tune to 88.7 and enjoy the lights from your car or you are welcome to walk the lighted paths! Hours: 5:30-10:30 pm nightly Thanksgiving through December 31st. Please use the North Springs Road or Two Notch Road entrances (Flora Drive gate is closed).
Yinzer Yuletide, 137 Timber Knoll Drive, Irmo Lights started December 3rd! Hours are 7 to 10 pm on weekdays and 7 to 11 pm on weekends.

Nesbitt House
740 Martin Smith Road, Gilbert SC 29054 This display gets bigger and bigger every year. View the lights from 5:30 pm to 9 pm nightly. If the gates are open, visitors are welcome to pull into the driveway and view the display from their cars. Please stay inside your vehicle. There is a parking area where vehicles can turn around to exit.
Visitors are also welcome to park along the road and view the display from the fence. Please do not walk inside the fence.
419 Mt Valley Road, Blythewood, This is the 10th year for these lights. The show runs from 5:30 to 10 pm nightly through New Year’s Eve. Donations are being collected for Make a Wish if guests would like to donate.
Loaded with Decorations in Pineridge, SC
Corner Dogwood Road & Fish Hatchery Road, this yard is full of decorations including a very large inflatable Santa.
Home in Camden
1678 Brewer Spring Road, Camden This home is a little farther from Columbia than the others, but it has roughly 22,000 lights and a huge display including reindeer and even a Minnie mouse.

Best Things to Do During Thanksgiving Break in Columbia, SC

Participate in a Turkey Day Race
I don’t consider myself a “runner,” but I did run my first 5K last year, and it just so happened to be a Turkey Day race! It was much more exciting and fun than I ever thought it would or even could be! Lucky for us, Columbia has three Turkey Day races to choose from and one of them even has an option for a kids/fun run. Burn off some calories and get home just in time to begin the festivities!
21st Annual Turkey Day 5K Run & Walk – Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands Time: 5K begins at 9 am, 1-mile fun run begins at 9:10 am, Thanksgiving Day Details: This race will be held at Colonial Life Arena and registration is open from now until the morning of the race. Shandon Turkey Trot & Burn 5K Time: Race begins at 10 am on BLACK FRIDAY Details: Don’t have time on the morning of Thanksgiving for racing? This 5K takes place on Friday, November 28, 2025. Runners are encouraged to wear their best thanksgiving costumes as there will be prizes for the top 3 best-dressed. Strollers and leashed dogs are also welcome to join in on the fun! Enjoy The Performing Arts: Nutcracker in Columbia, SC
Ready to get into the holiday spirit? Immersing yourself in the sights and sounds of the performing arts is a fun, family-friendly way to kick off the holiday season. Columbia Music Festival Association is presenting Ann Brodie’s Carolina Ballet “The Nutcracker” with Columbia Festival Orchestra at the Township Auditorium with shows running from November 25th 2025 through November 30th, 2025. Kick-Off Christmas by Going to a Light Display
One of my family’s favorite ways to get into the Christmas spirit is by going to a light show. There are A TON of them in Columbia that are very well done and perfect for all ages. Holiday Lights on the River and Carolina Lights are very popular and have been put on for several years. Both of these are drive-thru light displays with stops about halfway through for cookies, s’mores, gifts shops, etc.
Displaying again this year in Columbia is the Fireflies Light Show at Segra Park. Families will be able to walk around the baseball field to see several spectacular displays. There will also be other fun seasonal activities such as crafts, shopping, yummy treats, and more!
The Wild Lights at Riverbanks Zoo is another walk-through display. Zoo members can get into this event for FREE! Keep in mind that because this event is held at night, most of the zoo animals will already be put away.
The festive and family friendly Sleigh Bell Stroll at Saluda Shoals Park in Irmo is another event to mark on your calendar! Taking place Tuesday, November 25th from 6-8 pm, families will take a 2 mile walk through the Holiday Lights on the River. Pre-registration is required. If timed runs are more your speed, check out the Sleigh Bell Trot on Monday November 24th which is a four-mile timed run through the Holiday Lights on the River complete with awards for several age categories! Registration required.
With cooler temps and less humidity, Thanksgiving break is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy nature! There are plenty of options for paved paths around Columbia that make pushing strollers, riding bikes, or even rollerblading much easier!
West Columbia Riverwalk
My family’s favorite place to go is the West Columbia Riverwalk. We will often load up my son’s balance bike, the wagon for my youngest, and pack lunches; there are great options all around for an outdoor picnic! Once we’re done walking, we like to head right across the street to Carraway Park – one of my son’s absolute favorite playgrounds in Columbia!

If you’re looking for non-paved hiking paths, Sesquicentennial State Park is a great option. My family and I recently did the loop around the pond and while it starts off paved and open, it quickly becomes more adventurous and makes for a fantastic family hike! Another great option would be Harbison State Forest as there are tons of different trails with a variety of difficulty levels and lengths.
Begin Your Holiday Shopping
It’s that time again! Have you started your holiday shopping? If you’re looking to score some deals on Black Friday we suggest going to either Columbiana Mall or Village at Sandhills as both of these places have a large variety of stores all in one place.
On the hunt for something a little more unique or handcrafted? Try out Soda City Market on Saturday mornings from 9 am to 1 pm. There will be more than 100 vendors selling a variety of great gifts – paintings from local artists, handcrafted jewelry, soaps and lotions, unique clothing items and much more.
If boutique stores are more your thing, Five Points, The Vista, or State Street in West Columbia would be best for you. Along with popular and delicious restaurants, these areas also have antique stores, clothing boutiques, and gift shops that will have a little bit of everything.
Go to a Museum
Columbia is home to many great museums! If you haven’t been to them, you should definitely consider giving one (or all) of these a try!
Edventure Children’s Museum is packed full of hands-on, educational activities for babies and elementary-aged students. They’ve got a space exhibit, pretend play rooms, an area specifically for tots, an outdoor play space, and so much more!
TheSC State Museum sits right across from Edventure and while there isn’t a ton of things for preschool kids, there is still plenty to do and see. Here your kids will be able to dive into South Carolina history and learn about the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, see dinosaur and marine fossils, and visit a planetarium.

If anyone in your family loves art, the Columbia Museum of Art is the perfect place to go! With sculptures, paintings, photography, and more, you and your family will be fascinated with all of the beautiful work on display.

Breweries can be a great option because they have such a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere with food options for everyone. Here are some of the most kid-friendly breweries around Columbia where you can find large outdoor seating areas, live music, and entertainment for kids!
Savage Craft sits right in the heart of West Columbia and offers a HUGE outdoor seating area and green space. Also within eyesight is the West Columbia Interactive Art Walk. If the kiddos get antsy, take them on a quick stroll with huge murals and interactive instruments.
Steel Hands is another kid-friendly brewery that can be found in Cayce. They have a large outdoor area, covered seating, and an outdoor stage where live performers and bands can often be found.
