Experience A New Holiday Tradition: Fireflies Holiday Lights, Columbia, SC

Posted on |

Have you made a trip to the Fireflies Holiday Lights yet? The Fireflies Holiday Lights is back with the Columbia, SC tradition, and is all the rave this year! The Segra Park baseball stadium, home of the Fireflies, is decked out in tons of twinkling lights and interactive displays, there are several “stations” for families to stop and enjoy seasonal treats and kid-friendly crafts, and even booths for holiday shopping! We recently had the chance to go and highly suggest you and your family check it out.

2024 Season: Opens November 15th, 2024!

Fireflies Holiday Lights

Don’t Miss Out on This New Tradition in Columbia, SC

Segra Park is back with Fireflies Holiday Light Show! This event will run from November 15, 2024 through January 4, 2025. It is such a well-done, magical, winter wonderland that we think will stick around for years to come. There are over 1 MILLION beautiful lights all throughout the stadium. We would recommend setting aside about 2 hours to be able to fully enjoy all this event has to offer – lights, s’mores roasting, letters to Santa, etc.

Lights at Segra Park

So Many Lights!

Last year upon entering the light show, traffic flowed to the left where you were able to walk around the whole upper deck of the stadium. You could see a huge Christmas tree (perfect for a family photo-op), reindeer, elves, and more! Also towards the beginning of the walk was a concession stand that serves things such as hamburgers, fries, hot dogs, and chicken tenders.

Once you make your way around the top, you can walk down a flight of stairs to the field. Strollers and drinks are not permitted on the field, but there is a stroller parking area as well as tables or trash cans to dispose of any beverages. Walking on the field is cool on its own, but it’s so much more special with all of the light displays! My son loved running through the twinkling tunnel in the outfield.

What is there to do at the Fireflies Holiday Lights?

Aside from all of the lights displays, there are so many opportunities for family-friendly fun! There is a really neat space that my family stayed at for a while with fire pits, s’more roasting, and large games. We had such a great time roasting s’mores and then my son found another group of kiddos to play jumbo Jenga and Connect 4 with.

Smores at Segra Park Fireflies Holiday Lights

Another stop you can make are the craft tables! Here you will find activity books for kids, letters to Santa, and Santa’s giant red mailbox.

Know Before You Go: Fireflies Holiday Lights

Tickets for Fireflies Holiday Lights

All tickets MUST be purchased online. While you can purchase them on your phone at the entry gates, it is best to plan a bit ahead and buy them a few days before your trip. QR Codes will either be texted or emailed to you and scanned at the entrance. Ticket prices vary depending on day and age:

  • November Price: $10 per person
  • December/January Price: $12 per person
  • Military, seniors, and first responders receive $2 off
  • Ages 2 and under are FREE
Santa's letter box at Segra Park

Clear Bags Only

I am usually prepared for these clear bag-only situations; however, it completely slipped my mind when we packed up to go to the lights. Since the event is held inside the Segra Park stadium, the clear bag policy is still in place. No diaper bags, bookbags, large fanny packs, etc. will be permitted.

Plenty of Seating

My family and I went on a Sunday and took advantage of the free hotdog and drink for kids! We originally thought there weren’t enough seating options to sit and eat; however, as you keep traveling around the stadium there are PLENTY of seats and tables all along the walkways. So, if there aren’t open seats near the concessions (which will likely be the case) just walk to the left a little bit, and you’ll be sure to find some!

Cashless Facility

Segra Park is a cashless facility and will remain this way for the light show. However, if you do have cash, you can exchange it for gift cards at guest services. Gift cards can then be used at the concession stand and team store.

Kick-Off Christmas by Going to a Light Display

One of my family’s favorite ways to get into the Christmas spirit is by going to a light show. There are A TON of them in Columbia that are very well done and perfect for all ages. Holiday Lights on the River and Carolina Lights are very popular and have been put on for several years. Both of these are drive-thru light displays with stops about halfway through for cookies, s’mores, gifts shops, etc.

Displaying again this year in Columbia is the Fireflies Light Show at Segra Park. Families will be able to walk around the baseball field to see several spectacular displays. There will also be other fun seasonal activities such as crafts, shopping, yummy treats, and more!

The Wild Lights at Riverbanks Zoo is another walk-through display. Zoo members can get into this event for FREE! Keep in mind that because this event is held at night, most of the zoo animals will already be put away.

The festive and family friendly Sleigh Bell Stroll at Saluda Shoals Park in Irmo is another event to mark on your calendar! Taking place Tuesday, November 26 from 6-8 pm, families will take a 2 mile walk through the Holiday Lights on the River. Pre-registration is required. If timed runs are more your speed, check out the Sleigh Bell Trot on Monday November 25th which is a four-mile timed run through the Holiday Lights on the River complete with awards for several age categories! Registration required.

Enjoy the Outdoors

With cooler temps and less humidity, Thanksgiving break is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy nature! There are plenty of options for paved paths around Columbia that make pushing strollers, riding bikes, or even rollerblading much easier!

Paved path at West Columbia Riverwalk
West Columbia Riverwalk

My family’s favorite place to go is the West Columbia Riverwalk. We will often load up my son’s balance bike, the wagon for my youngest, and pack lunches; there are great options all around for an outdoor picnic! Once we’re done walking, we like to head right across the street to Carraway Park  – one of my son’s absolute favorite playgrounds in Columbia!

The playground at Carraway Park in West Columbia
Carraway Park

If you’re looking for non-paved hiking paths, Sesquicentennial State Park is a great option. My family and I recently did the loop around the pond and while it starts off paved and open, it quickly becomes more adventurous and makes for a fantastic family hike! Another great option would be Harbison State Forest as there are tons of different trails with a variety of difficulty levels and lengths.

Begin Your Holiday Shopping

It’s that time again! Have you started your holiday shopping? If you’re looking to score some deals on Black Friday we suggest going to either Columbiana Mall or Village at Sandhills as both of these places have a large variety of stores all in one place.

On the hunt for something a little more unique or handcrafted? Try out Soda City Market on Saturday mornings from 9 am to 1 pm. There will be more than 100 vendors selling a variety of great gifts – paintings from local artists, handcrafted jewelry, soaps and lotions, unique clothing items and much more.

If boutique stores are more your thing, Five Points, The Vista, or State Street in West Columbia would be best for you. Along with popular and delicious restaurants, these areas also have antique stores, clothing boutiques, and gift shops that will have a little bit of everything.

Go to a Museum

Columbia is home to many great museums! If you haven’t been to them, you should definitely consider giving one (or all) of these a try!

Edventure Children’s Museum is packed full of hands-on, educational activities for babies and elementary-aged students. They’ve got a space exhibit, pretend play rooms, an area specifically for tots, an outdoor play space, and so much more!

The SC State Museum sits right across from Edventure and while there isn’t a ton of things for preschool kids, there is still plenty to do and see. Here your kids will be able to dive into South Carolina history and learn about the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, see dinosaur and marine fossils, and visit a planetarium.

If anyone in your family loves art, the Columbia Museum of Art is the perfect place to go! With sculptures, paintings, photography, and more, you and your family will be fascinated with all of the beautiful work on display.

Have Fun at a Local Family-Friendly Brewery

You may be looking for an option this Thanksgiving where your family can combine the best of both worlds – adult conversations and entertainment for the kiddos! Breweries can be a great option because they have such a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere with food options for everyone. Here are some of the most kid-friendly breweries around Columbia where you can find large outdoor seating areas, live music, and entertainment for kids!

Savage Craft sits right in the heart of West Columbia and offers a HUGE outdoor seating area and green space. Also within eyesight is the West Columbia Interactive Art Walk. If the kiddos get antsy, take them on a quick stroll with huge murals and interactive instruments.

Steel Hands is another kid-friendly brewery that can be found in Cayce. They have a large outdoor area, covered seating, and an outdoor stage where live performers and bands can often be found.

Stay Cozy at Home

Maybe you’re looking to stay a little more low-key this Thanksgiving break. There really is something so refreshing about staying in the comfort of your own home, slowing down, and enjoying family time. Let’s face it, though, if you’ve got littles you still have to have some sort of activities lined up!

  • Watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade – such a classic and timeless tradition!
  • Out with the old and in with the new – Have your children help you clean out their toys to prepare for Santa’s deliveries
  • Ask your kiddos to make their Christmas Lists
  • Write and mail letters to Santa
  • Make crafts with your kids to give to relatives throughout the holidays – a few years ago I made handprint ornaments with my son (using just a few ingredients that I already had on hand) and the grandparents LOVED them!

Enjoy a Quick Day-Cation

Sometimes it’s fun to load everyone up for a spontaneous day trip! There are 3 great cities within 2 to 3 hours from Columbia that offer fantastic attractions for kids and families.

Charleston, SC

Load your family up for a quick trip to Charleston and enjoy the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, the South Carolina Aquarium, or even just stroll through the beautiful streets of downtown.

Greenville, SC

Another fun day-cation spot is Greenville, SC! Head over to our Kidding Around Greenville site for more events and ideas such as the Children’s Museum of the Upstate, great hiking trails, and more! Greenville has its own list of fun things to do over Thanksgiving break.

Charlotte is a third great option for a quick getaway! In “Queen City” you’ll find endless dining options, the Nascar Hall of Fame, and the Sea Life Aquarium, just to name A FEW.

Along with ice skating, there is also a food truck and full-time bar. For $20 per person you will get 1 hour of skating time, skate rentals (smallest size is youth size 9), and 1 hot chocolate! Hours are as follows:

  • Thursdays and Fridays from 4 pm to 8 pm beginning November 17th, 2023
  • Saturdays and Sundays from 1 pm to 8 pm beginning November 19th, 2023

Visit the Local Shops

With so many locally-owned shops and businesses to choose from, picking a favorite would be hard! We popped into a few and really enjoyed all of the Christmas shops. We purchased an ornament from Uncle Bunky’s Christmas Cottage where they also had tons of holiday decor, small toys, sweet treats, etc. Loose Moose is another great gift store with lots of unique items to choose from.

Madison’s on Main and Humanite Boutique are both great options for trendy women’s clothing! There are also several antique stores around that are always fun to browse through – you never know what you might find!

Enjoy a Tasty Sweet Treat

If you’re anything like me, the sweet tooth is at an all-time high throughout the holidays. The good news is, Bryson City has so many opportunities for delicious treats! After our ride on the Polar Express we stopped into the Heavenly Fudge Depot and let me just say, it lived up to its name! The peanut butter fudge from here was divine. They also had several festive sweet treats for kids – chocolate “believe” tickets and trains, cookies, bite-sized sweets, and more!

The Chocolate Shoppe, Soda Pop’s Ice Cream, and Pop-N-Jacks Gourmet Popcorn are also great options to cure the sweet tooth! The popcorn from Pop-N-Jacks can even be brought onto the Polar Express with you and smells so good. I’m a little upset we didn’t stop in and give them a try, too!

Take Festive Pictures

Still need a family pic for this year’s Christmas card? There are tons of great holiday photo-ops everywhere you look in Bryson City! From the large, lit-up Christmas tree in the middle of the plaza to stationary train carts, a tractor, and more, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for family photos.

Get Your Live Christmas Tree

While there are no Christmas tree farms in Bryson City, there are several to choose from nearby. During our trip, we chose to get our tree at Smoky Mountain Tree Farm. They had a large variety of trees to choose from and even some that you could cut down yourself. The big red barn and beautiful Smoky Mountain scenery made for great pictures as well!

There are two other tree farms within a few minutes of Smoky Mountain Tree Farm: Boyd Mountain Christmas Tree Farm and Mehaffey Tree Farm. Boyd Mountain Farm has several log cabins available for families to stay in as well as stocked fishing ponds, 4 miles of hiking trails, biking, and more!

Loads of Fun and Learning at Fox Farm

Your family will love the quaint and welcoming atmosphere at Fox Farm! There is a lot to love about this locally-owned farm, but one thing that really stood out to me were all of the great opportunities for hands-on learning. From feeding farm animals to riding horses and everything in between, your children will be able to experience so much during your visit!

You Must Schedule Your Visit in Advance

Fox Farm is open for family visits most Saturday’s throughout the year. However, it is important to note that they are by APPOINTMENT ONLY. This is to make sure they have enough staff available in order to give you and your family the best experience possible. To schedule your visit you can email foxfarmsc@yahoo.com or call 803.351.2462.

In my experience, scheduling our trip was pretty simple. The owners responded to my emails quickly and were easy to work with. When our initial date didn’t work out, they were very helpful in offering new dates and times that would work with both of our schedules.

For just $7 per child, your kiddos will be able to enjoy all of the exciting things the farm has to offer – horse riding, animal feeding, a hayride, and playground. What is There To Do at Fox Farm?

Horse Rides

One unique thing about Fox Farm is that they offer horse rides! Saddle up and enjoy being led down the path and back again. Both of my kids (1 and 3 years old) loved riding the horses! My son was able to ride by himself and although he started off a little nervous and unsure, he very quickly loosened up and had the best time. They allowed me to ride on the same horse with my 1-year old which was so fun and memorable.

Barnyard and Animal Feedings

Head over to the barnyard to get up close and personal to several of the farm animals! Staff members call you into groups where they will then lead you around the barnyard and hand out food for feeding. Throughout your adventure, you will have the opportunity to pet and feed a donkey, alpaca, pony, sheep, rabbits, and more!

Hayride

Almost all of us have been on at least one hayride, but the hayrides at Fox Farm are unlike any other. Also referred to as “CRAAAZY Time,” your kiddos will have a lot of fun giggling and playing along with the driver throughout the ride. Along with this silly, bumpy ride you will also be able to see more of the property.

Play Area

The play area is in the middle of the farm and has several great obstacles and activities for kids. They’ve got traditional swings, bucket swings, slides, and my son’s personal favorite, the tractor to “drive.”
