Local Mom Review: Old Mill Brew Pub
Old Mill Brew Pub is one of our favorite restaurants in Columbia. Their menu and food is great. The atmosphere is family-friendly with a new patio that has an oversized connect four board to enjoy.
They also have expanded to an open patio room for dining that provides a beautiful water view overlooking the Old Mill Pond Trail paved walking path.
The path is a great place to take a short walk after your meal or even entertain the kids while you wait for your table. There are many benches around the trail and to the left of the restaurant, there is a waterfall only a short distance away when waiting for your table.

Watch! Our Visit to Flight Deck
The Restaurant: Flight Deck
Just walking toward the entrance is an experience in itself! The restaurant is situated at the back of a small shopping center, and the path leading to it is lined with palm trees, patio tables, and storefronts. The palm trunks are wrapped in lights and beautiful as it was in winter, I can only imagine the landscaping in the spring and summer!
The kids will be captivated by all the things to look at inside Flight Deck. There are life-size superheroes, which are great photo ops, airplanes hanging from the ceiling, and even a huge King Kong! Be warned parents – they have a case of fresh baked cookies, Jelly Belly Station, and gumball machines with candy, gumballs, and toys so bring quarters and be prepared for the “Can I have those PLEASE?!” line! Go ahead and get yourself a cookie, too, because they are delicious!
The Flight Deck menu is very kid-friendly, and prices are affordable, as well. If the kids get antsy while waiting for the food, take a stroll around and look at the military memorabilia throughout the restaurant! All the cool medals, patches, coins, and decor will surely spark some questions that you can even transform into a learning opportunity! Each piece has its own unique story!
Our meal was good; the service was fast and friendly. I highly recommend ordering a slice of their gourmet cake, even if you just take it to go. It was delicious, and the worst part was deciding on just one kind! One slice is large enough to share.
Flight Deck
Arcade at Flight Deck
The arcade does have a separate entrance from the back of the building/parking lot but walking in the front is fun! If you choose to come in through the arcade entrance, be sure to take the kids on a quick walk through the restaurant, and don’t miss the 3D wall sculpture as you pass through!
The arcade has bright lights and a fun atmosphere. There are lots of games including, skee ball, whack a mole, racing, pinball, air hockey, giant connect four, and claw games. Keep in mind, not all the games give tickets so if your little is on a mission for prizes, check to make sure first.
While the arcade area is not a huge space, it is big enough that you don’t feel crowded but not so large as other popular chain arcades where keeping an eye on young ones is overwhelming. They also have 2 smaller rooms off the main room that offer several games where you can let younger ones spread out while still staying contained.
There are ticket counting machines that you feed any tickets into once you are done. They also have a prize vending machine if you want to skip the prize line and choose from something within instead. They do have different items in the case than in the vending machine, so be sure to check out both.
Special Events
They offer special events throughout the year, and it would make a great place to celebrate your child’s birthday. Flight Deck has several private rooms available in varying sizes to accommodate your needs.
The night we went, they were hosting a ladies-only bingo night and had several vendor tables set up, and it was decorated so beautifully! Check their Facebook page for upcoming events or contact them to set up your own private event.
Tips for Flight Deck
Keep tickets in longer strands for easier putting into the counting machine
Bring something to easily carry tickets and tokens (small tote bag, etc)
If you happen to forget a tote, the hostess desk has grocery bags, and there are condiment-sized cups at the token machine which makes carrying tickets easier. You can also fold all the tickets and carry them in the cups as well.
Bring cash (small bills) for arcade and quarters for the gumball machines:
They have an ATM machine there which appears to dispense $5 bills; however, the ATM machine carries a fee. Once you have the tokens, they cannot be exchanged back for cash, so only take out what you plan to use. We got $30 worth of $5 bills but only cashed in $5 at a time for the tokens – while we did end up using all our tokens in this visit, it was easier managing a few tokens at a time, and it helped my son to be more selective in what he chose to do. Had we cashed in all of them at once, it would have looked like an endless supply of tokens. Plus, we had the option of leaving with our cash rather than a pocket full of tokens to keep track of until our next visit.
If you don’t earn enough tickets to snag the prizes you want, you can print your ticket receipt, keep it in a safe place until you return, and “save up” the tickets you need!
Timing: Avoiding the Busier Times
We came on a Mommy & Son date and took advantage of a half day of school. We were able to come early, around 2 pm – and stayed until about 6 pm. We only saw about 3-4 other people in the arcade during our visit, and most of the time it was just us.
We were able to eat (around 4 pm) with only a couple of other people eating at that time. As we were heading out, both the arcade and restaurant were beginning to get busy, and I can only imagine it gets quite busy during peak hours.
I would recommend consulting Google to determine the best time to go for your family. If you have young children, they would be able to have more freedom to roam during the less busy hours.
We decided to play until we were hungry, ate, and then went back to the arcade to spend the remainder of our tokens. We left with full tummies and happy hearts. This was a great place for our date night, and we look forward to going back again soon!

Conveniently located on Main Street in downtown Columbia, The Grand on Main puts a unique spin on the classic bowling experience. This bowling alley – restaurant duo is perfect for a family activity or even a night out with some adult friends and your significant other! The 1900’s building was once home to a popular theater and still displays several original features – giving it a cozy, laid-back vibe.
Boutique Bowling Experience at The Grand
At the back of the restaurant, you will find the bowling alley which is made up of just 7 lanes! Instead of traditional bowling alley seating, they’ve got comfy leather couches and large tables to sit at. The Grand on Main: Restaurant
My family and I have eaten here a few times and each time we’ve had a great experience! Like the bowling alley, the restaurant has a lot of non-traditional features that continue on with its comfy, cozy theme. The majority of the tables are large, round tables surrounded by cushioned couch-style seating. There are decorative pillows on the seats, low lighting, and unique decor all around.
Brunch is served at the restaurant every Saturday and Sunday from 10 am until 2 pm. Lunch and dinner are served throughout the week beginning at 11 am through 11 pm. On these menus, you will find a variety of starters, sandwiches, tacos, and entrees such as goat cheese basil salmon and Louisville ribs. The chips and dip trio (specifically the “peppamento” cheese) and cheddar herb biscuits are two of my family’s favorites!
The Robinson Room: The Grand’s Secret Dessert & Cocktail Bar
The Grand has converted their secret lower level into a swanky dessert and cocktail bar called The Robinson Room. The menu here is always changing; however, there are a few signature desserts and cocktails that almost always stick around. One of their most popular cocktails is a creative, “Duck, Duck, Drink” that is served in a miniature bathtub complete with rubber duckies. I’m not sure about you, but this sounds like the perfect end to a date night with my spouse or a new place to try out for girls’ night!
Special Events at The Grand
The Grand on Main has a full line-up of musicians and fun events throughout the year. You will see live music from performers such as Katera, Roy Day Jr., John Monnecka, and more! Be sure to check out their events page to stay up-to-date with all they have to offer!

Watch! Our Visit to Morelia
What is a Paleta?
What exactly is a paleta? Paletas are large, frozen, hand-made Mexican popsicles, made with all-natural ingredients. Paleta is a Spanish word meaning “little stick.”
All Natural Ingredients and Dietary Accommodations
All of Morelia’s paletas are made with 100%, all-natural ingredients. What also sets Morelia apart is its selection of dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegan paletas. And all of their paletas are also certified Kosher!
My Visit to Morelia Gourmet Paletas
A line extends out the door of Morelia Gourmet Paletas as I approach with my two children in tow. It’s Morelia’s Grand Opening, and if the line of excited patrons is any indication of what’s soon to come, then I’m in for a treat, literally!
Order Instructions
I first meet the Forest Acres location’s owner, Stanley Roberts, in line outside. With a Morelia menu in hand, he enthusiastically greets each customer and provides instructions on how to order a paleta.
Pick It
Roberts explains, “You basically have several different types of paletas to choose from. Okay, you have the fruity kind. You have the creamy kind, which is more like ice cream. Then you have specialty ones that are filled with things like Nutella. You’ve got one filled with Bailey’s. You’ve got a condensed milk one. And so you can choose any one of those.”
Dip It
“What you do next is you dip it. You can dip it in dark chocolate, white chocolate, cookie butter or crunchy hazelnut. The dip allows us to stick the toppings to your bar,” says Roberts.
Top It
“Then, here are all the kinds of toppings: Oreo crumbs, peanuts, almonds, pistachio, we’ve even got pecans, rainbow sprinkles and chocolate sprinkles,” the owner explains.
Special Toppings
Roberts then describes Morelia’s special toppings to us. “Some people do s’mores, and that’s the one where we put the marshmallow on, burn it with a torch, and then there are other specialties like a waffle bowl,” he exclaims.
The Owners’ Favorite Paletas
Before I decide on an order I decide to ask the expert, Roberts, what he and his colleagues’ go-to paletas are. Roberts replies, “My favorite combination is the cookies and cream, dipped in white chocolate and topped with Oreo crumbs. Yeah, that’s my favorite.” He says his business partner, however, prefers pistachio. “My partner loves pistachio. He likes pistachio with white chocolate and graham cracker. But he also likes the lime with the graham cracker as well. I think those are his two favorites.”
My Order
After hearing Roberts’ Paletas order spiel, I’m feeling a little less intimidated by all the choices. We finally reach the inside and approach a display counter lined with the brightly colored paletas selection. I’m awe-struck by the sheer number of picturesque paletas and their descriptions. Names like “dulce de leche filled with dulce de leche,” “pineapple mint,” “and “chocolate hazelnut cookies & cream” line display shelf.
Because I want to experience the full Morelia Gourmet Paletas treatment, I opt to try the banana paleta filled with Nutella, dipped in white chocolate, and topped with s’mores! This is a fully interactive experience, as you watch as the employees prepare your order right in front of you.
I watch my banana paleta as it’s dipped in white chocolate, and then it is set aside to cool, before it’s smothered in marshmallow cream. Once the paleta is covered, the marshmallow cream is torched until the marshmallow is toasted My oldest daughter selects the mint chocolate chip paleta topped with sprinkles.
The Verdict
When I say I can taste each layered flavor in every bite, I mean it. I can taste the freshness of the bananas, the unmistakable Nutella taste, and of course the perfectly toasted marshmallow. Each flavor compliments the next with each bite. The warm, gooey marshmallow harmonizes perfectly with the cold, white chocolate-dipped paleta.
The sticky marshmallow may be a bit messy, but I don’t mind one bit. My daughters, Elle and Ali share their pastel-colored mint chocolate chip paleta covered in rainbow sprinkles. Their photos are evidence that no bite was left behind!
Morelia Gourmet Paletas is a refreshing take on desserts and ice cream, offering a one-of-a-kind experience and fun for the entire family! And let me tell you, it is worth every single sticky bite!
