Dreher Island State Park is a popular place among those in the Midlands, and for good reason. We just decided to take a short drive to the park one afternoon and it was absolutely beautiful! The park sits on the largest island in Lake Murray, connected to the mainland by a bridge on the northern side, and from the moment you cross over, you feel like you’ve left the city behind.

We saw deer and enjoyed riding through the park at sunset. Beautiful views all around. If you’re looking for a place where your family can unplug, explore, and soak in some serious natural beauty without a long drive, Dreher Island should be at the top of your list.

Playgrounds Throughout the Park

Dreher Island has three playgrounds scattered throughout the park, so no matter where you’re set up for the day, the kids will have somewhere to burn off energy. You’ll find one near the Visitor Center, another on White Oak Lane, and a third in Camping Area B. They have several playgrounds nestled throughout the park, and each one is surrounded by trees and natural beauty, making it feel like your kids are playing in the middle of the woods in the best way possible.

Hiking the Trails

There are three trails at Dreher Island, and they’re all manageable for families with young kids. The Billy Dreher Nature Trail is a short 0.25-mile walk that starts near the Community Building. It’s flat, easy, and perfect for little legs. The Little Gap Trail is a more moderate 2.1-mile hike that starts from the kiosk on Yellow Poplar Drive. And there’s also a 0.33-mile multi-use trail through the middle of State Park Loop that’s open to both bikes and foot traffic.

We enjoyed a short walk to the end of the dock with our pups just in time for sunset. Honestly, even if hiking isn’t your thing, just walking through the park at golden hour is worth the trip.

Camping at Dreher Island

If you want to turn your day trip into an overnight adventure, Dreher Island has some fantastic camping options. The park offers 97 paved campsites for RVs or tent camping, plus 15 tent-only sites for those who want a more rustic experience. They have very thoughtfully designed campsites with flat areas perfect for pitching a tent or setting up an outdoor seating area if you have a camper.

For families who want a little more comfort, there are also five lakeside villas (two with two bedrooms and three with three bedrooms) that come fully equipped with linens, cooking utensils, a coffee maker, microwave, dishwasher, fireplace, screened-in porch, and even a TV. It’s basically glamping with a lake view.

Fishing and Boating on Lake Murray

Lake Murray is a 50,000-acre lake known for some of the best bass fishing in South Carolina. You can fish right from the shoreline at Dreher Island for largemouth bass, striped bass, catfish, bream, crappie, and yellow perch. A valid SC fishing license is required, and you can actually purchase one right at the park store. They even participate in the Tackle Loaner Program through the SC Department of Natural Resources, so you can borrow rods and reels if you didn’t bring your own.

The park has three boat ramps for private boat access to the lake, and in-water refueling is available at the marina. If you don’t have your own boat, ask the park staff for a list of local rental vendors for boats, canoes, and kayaks.

We loved how peaceful it felt just driving through the park, and watching the sunset from the dock was one of those moments that reminded us why we love living in the Midlands.
