If you’re looking for a fun, active, and easy-to-access park day, Finlay Park in downtown Columbia, SC, absolutely delivers. I recently visited for the first time and honestly—wow. This 14-acre park is the largest and most visited park in the city, and even with a shorter visit, I could tell there is so much here for families.
First Impressions About Finlay Park + What I Noticed Right Away
One of the first things I noticed was The Landing, a large building you really can’t miss. This quickly became the home base for our visit.
Inside, you’ll find:
- Snacks and drinks
- Insect repellent and sunscreen
- Amenity and equipment rentals
Having all of that in one spot made it really easy, especially with kids.
Playground Fun: Cola Summit Playscapes
This is perhaps the star of the whole park.
We spent most of our time at the Cola Summit Playscapes. This area is a total kid magnet (and actually pretty impressive for adults too!). It’s a gorgeous and very unique playground area that we will definitely play at again.

The climbing structures are large, imaginative, and unlike anything else in the Columbia area.
Here’s what stood out to me:
- 5 slides
- Climbing structures
- Balancing obstacles
- Swings
- A giant turf hill slide

Hill Turf Slide
Kids have a blast sliding down the giant turf hill slide on cardboard, but a word to the wise, cardboard is at a premium during busy times. I definitely recommend bringing your own. That said, we didn’t have any, and you can still slide down at a fun speed.
And yes—adults, I’m including us here—the hill is fun for everyone. I also found myself just watching everyone else go down because it’s that entertaining.

Thoughtful Park Design (Parent Wins!)
One thing I really appreciated was how the playground blends into the natural landscape. It doesn’t feel crowded or overwhelming, even when it’s busy.
Things I was especially glad to see:
- Clean drinking water fountains
- Water bottle filler stations
- Shaded tables with umbrellas between the playgrounds
Those shaded tables were a nice break spot, and the water refill station is always a win.
Splash Pad + Water Features
While there is no swimming, wading, or fishing allowed in the pond, fountain, or grotto, there is a splash pad. I didn’t spend time there on this visit, but it’s definitely on my list for next time. If you check it out, send us your thoughts and photos! Email them to Rachael@kiddingaroundcolumbia.com. Or, visit us on the Kidding Around Columbia Community Facebook page.
Activities I Didn’t Get To (But Will Next Time!)
I only visited the playgrounds, restrooms, and the wide open grassy space, but I could see there’s so much more to explore:
- Fitness court
- 4 pickleball courts
- Equipment rentals (paddles and balls available)
- Ping pong tables
- Roller skating loop (you can rent skates or bring your own)
Next time, I’m planning to build in more time to check these out.
Events + Community Feel at Finlay Park in Columbia, SC
From what I saw and what I’ve heard, there is almost always something going on here. Think:
- Summer concert series
- Screen on the Green movie nights
- Other community events throughout the year
It definitely feels like one of those places you could visit multiple times and have a different experience each time. Check out these upcoming events at Finlay Park.
Good to Know Before You Go
Here are a few things I either noticed or learned that are helpful for families:

- 24/7 security including police and park rangers
- Emergency call boxes throughout the park
