Gather COLA is Columbia’s first open-air food hall, tucked into the BullStreet District with ten food vendors, a craft cocktail bar, a brewery taproom, and a turf lawn big enough for kids to run wild between bites. Here’s what a Saturday night with our kids there actually looked like, from parking to the pretzel-sized decision of what to order first, plus the Quick Facts and FAQ you need before you go.
We ate at Gather COLA this past weekend in the BullStreet district and walked away pretty impressed. Parking was surprisingly easy. There was a huge lot with plenty of open spaces, just a short walk from the entrance. Most shocking of all: we showed up on a Saturday night at peak dinner time, with beautiful weather and a Gamecocks game on, and still parked without any trouble.
Directly across from the entrance is a huge green space with giant Jenga, cornhole boards, and kids kicking a soccer ball and tossing a football around. We’re not sure if those are always set up or if the families we saw brought their own, but either way, one of the coolest parts is that you can sit right there on the lawn while the kids play and still watch the game on the giant screen inside Gather.

What Gather COLA Actually Is
Gather COLA calls itself Columbia’s first open-air food hall, and that’s a pretty accurate description. It’s a mix of food vendors, bars, a couple of retail shops, and community gathering space, all built around an outdoor lawn in the BullStreet District, right next to the Bennet at BullStreet apartments and the WestLawn office building along Freed Street. The vibe is designed to work for everyone: families with kids, young professionals, date nights, and solo dinners can all find their spot, whether that’s a high-top table, an Adirondack chair on the lawn, or a seat upstairs at the bar.

The Lawn: Where Kids Can Actually Run While You Eat
For families, this is the real draw. The lawn directly across from Gather’s entrance had giant Jenga, cornhole boards, and a pack of kids playing soccer and tossing a football when we visited. There are Adirondack chairs and string lights strung overhead, so it doesn’t feel like an afterthought; it feels like the whole point. You can genuinely sit down, order a plate, and let your kids run themselves tired on real turf grass a few feet away, all while keeping an eye on the game on the big screen inside.
We watched one group of kids just fold into an existing pickup soccer game with total strangers, the way kids do when there’s enough open space and nobody’s rushing them inside. That’s not something we’ve found easily at other Columbia restaurants.

How Ordering Works: Ten Vendors, One Text Alert
Walking in, you’ll see the full vendor lineup listed right at the entrance, which helps narrow down decisions before you’re standing in front of a menu with hungry kids. As of our visit, Gather COLA’s food vendors were:

- Smoke It Up Express (Southern barbecue)
- Kiki’s Chicken and Waffles (Columbia soul food since 2012)
- Big Easy Seafood (New Orleans-style seafood)
- Bessie’s Burgers and More (Southern smashburgers)
- Melt Cheesesteaks & More (Philly-style cheesesteaks)
- Los Chicanos (family-owned Tex-Mex food truck)
- Gyromania Grill (Greek-Mediterranean)
- Bull and Bread (elevated sandwiches, with vegan and vegetarian options)
- Cocobowlz (açaí bowls and smoothies)
- Banh Sai (Asian fusion comfort food)
With about ten vendors serving Cajun, burgers, barbecue, chicken, cheesesteaks, gyros, and açaí bowls, there’s genuinely something for pickier eaters and adventurous ones at the same table. Once you place your order at a stand, they text you when it’s ready, which makes ordering from two or three different vendors for one family a lot less chaotic than it sounds.
Gather COLA also says it accommodates dietary restrictions, with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and allergen-friendly options available across multiple vendors, so it’s worth asking at the window if your family has specific needs.
Good to know: Kiki’s Chicken and Waffles has its own walk-up window inside Gather, separate from the shared order boards, so look for the “order here” sign if that’s your family’s target.

Upstairs, the Big Screen, and Live Music
Upstairs at Gather COLA is Remedy, a craft cocktail bar overlooking the amphitheater, plus additional seating if you want to get away from the ground-floor crowd for a bit (note: pets aren’t allowed up there). Downstairs, there’s a genuinely huge screen beside the lawn, chairs for relaxing, a sectional with a firepit off to the side, and even a small kids’ picnic table with a giant Connect Four set. There are plenty of high-top tables scattered around for eating too.
Gather COLA also runs weekly events, specials, and live music when it’s scheduled. If you have a child who’s sensitive to loud noise, either plan your visit around a quieter night or come prepared with ear protection, because it can get loud and crowded once a band or DJ gets going.

What We Ordered (and What We’d Get Again)
We ordered oyster handhelds from Big Easy Seafood along with a shrimp kids’ meal, and both were delicious, crispy fried oysters tucked into soft tortillas with a creamy dipping sauce and well-seasoned fries on the side. We also got a chicken sandwich, fries, and fried pickles from Kiki’s Chicken and Waffles, which was just as good; the chicken was crunchy and well-seasoned, and the fried pickles disappeared fast. For drinks, we grabbed a lemonade from Melt Cheesesteaks & More, and it might be one of the best lemonades we’ve had.

Kiki’s also has a kids’ menu, which is where our shrimp option came from, a nice change of pace for families whose kids want something other than a plain chicken tender basket.
Budget Tips for Families
Ordering from multiple vendors for a family can add up fast. A few ways we’d budget smarter next time:
- Feed the kids a snack before you go if you’re watching costs. Drinks add up quickly once you’re ordering from a couple of different stands.
- Bring your own water if you can. On our visit, the vendors mainly sold bottled water, and outside food and drinks were not allowed inside the venue itself.
- Split a couple of big items across vendors instead of ordering a full meal from each stand. With ten options, it’s easy to over-order.
- Download the Passport Parking app before you arrive so you don’t miss the two free parking hours.
Our Honest Take
The service was excellent every time we ordered, and we appreciated that we hadn’t repeated a single dish across our visits because there’s genuinely so much to try. If we’re being picky, the noise and crowd size on a big game night won’t be for every family, and the per-vendor pricing model means it’s easy to spend more than you planned. But as a place where our kids could actually run around on real grass, play cornhole, and watch a game with us instead of being stuck at a table, Gather COLA earns a strong recommendation from us. It was the perfect spot for our kids to burn off energy when they got a little antsy, since we had the space to let them do it.
