History and Culture of West Columbia
West Columbia was formally chartered about 100 years after the neighboring city of Columbia, SC, and its origin story tells you so much about what you’ll find there, even today. While the capital city of Columbia was built and designed to be an urban center of commerce, West Columbia was originally founded for a single purpose: To be a home.
At the very end of the 1800s, the Columbia Mills Company started construction on the Columbia Duck Mill on the east side of Congaree River. The employees for the mill, however, needed a place to call home, and the decision was made to construct a mill village across the river—the first major development in the city of West Columbia.

Riverbanks Zoo & Gardens is one of the best outdoor attractions in South Carolina. The zoo stretches across the Saluda River, and it has entrances on both the Columbia and West Columbia sides.
