The Ponds and Wildlife

The ponds are full of turtles and some very large fish, and the kids really enjoyed watching them swim around. Adjoining the main gardens, the Wetlands area (added in 1993) acts as a natural filtration system and adds a tranquil marshland setting. You can walk the perimeter and spot ducks, turtles, fish, and a variety of plants and trees.

Good to know: No fishing or swimming is allowed in the ponds.

The Doll House

One of the most charming features is the Doll House, the former playhouse and schoolhouse of the Iselin children. The center portion of the structure is one of the first types of modular homes from the early 1900s, ordered from a Hodgson Company catalog and assembled with nuts and bolts. It now houses the Aiken Garden Club Council and its reference library.

The Doll House is open to the public every Sunday from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM, May through November. During Christmas in Hopelands, the Garden Club decorates it in holiday fare and hosts an open house.

Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame

Located on the Hopelands grounds, the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum celebrates Aiken’s deep connection to horse racing. Mrs. Iselin herself was known in the United States and England as “the great lady of racing” for her lifetime interest in thoroughbred horses. You’ll also find the Historic Horses of Aiken exhibit at the Stable on the property.

The Arboretum Trail and More to Explore

There is an arboretum trail with a cell phone tour. QR codes can be found on the map just beyond the parking lot. Beyond the trail, you’ll also find a Touch and Scent Trail, a labyrinth, a gazebo, a reflection pool, three decorated “Horseplay” statues, two swings, a stage, and Oak Alley.

They also have garden sites available for rent, and many people come to do photos here. It’s easy to see why.

The Fountains

Follow the former driveway past the Hall of Fame to reach three magnificent fountains placed in the foundation of the former Iselin home. At the steps, you’ll see two greyhound statues that once guarded the house. You can just imagine what life was like surrounded by this lush estate.

Tips for Visiting with Kids

  • They also have the cleanest public park restrooms I have seen. Seriously, it’s worth mentioning.
  • The pathways are a mix of stone and sand, so strollers with bigger wheels will do better. The terrain is flat and very manageable for little ones.
  • Grab the garden map near the parking lot. It includes QR codes for the arboretum trail’s cell phone tour, a fun way to keep older kids engaged.
