Our Kidding Around review of Congaree National Park

Fall is hands-down the best time to visit Congaree National Park. As the weather cools and the mosquitoes die down, the park comes alive with vibrant fall foliage, typically peaking in mid-to-late October. It’s the perfect season to explore the 2.4-mile boardwalk trail, which is stroller-friendly and offers an easy way to take in the beauty of the park. Be sure to check out the free ranger-led programs on weekends for some extra fun and learning for the entire family!

Note: The Congaree National Park Boardwalk Construction project is currently underway, with sections of the boardwalk closed periodically. Check current construction updates to find out which parts of the boardwalk will be affected prior to your visit!

Bike the Three Rivers Greenway

Cost for a family of 4: Free (BYOB: Bring your own bike)

The Saluda Riverwalk, Cayce Riverwalk, and West Columbia Riverwalk are all part of the greater Three Rivers Greenway in the Columbia area, but each offers a unique experience with different locations, lengths, and levels of connectivity.

Saluda Riverwalk

The Saluda Riverwalk is a newer, paved trail spanning 2.5 miles along the Saluda River near Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden. It offers wide, bike-friendly paths with scenic river views, wooded areas, and a historic canal. While it has multiple access points, it doesn’t yet connect directly to the Cayce or West Columbia Riverwalks, so you’d need to drive or ride between them.

Cayce/West Columbia Riverwalk

On the other side of the river, the Cayce Riverwalk follows the Congaree River for about 3 miles through woods and wetlands, featuring paved paths and boardwalks ideal for walking, running, and light biking (though some boardwalk sections require caution). This trail connects seamlessly to the West Columbia Riverwalk, which runs another 2.5 miles along the Congaree, offering open river views, historic markers, and easy access to downtown Columbia via the Gervais Street Bridge. Together, the Cayce and West Columbia trails form a continuous path perfect for longer rides or walks, while the Saluda Riverwalk remains separate but is part of a larger vision to one day connect all three rivers’ greenways.

Lined with rich foliage and serene river views, these paths are ideal for walking, biking, or simply just soaking in the season. With free parking and miles of shaded trails, it’s easy to spend an entire afternoon exploring the riverwalks. Pack a picnic lunch and unwind under one of the sheltered areas, and keep an eye out for local wildlife—you might spot turtles, herons, or even an alligator along the way!
